In the late 90's, the United States
FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved laser system
for refractive vision correction. Since that time, approximately
1.5 million procedures have been performed annually in the United
States and the procedure is predicted to continue its popularity.
The US ophthalmologic community, including American Academy
of Ophthalmology (AAO) and American Society of Cataract &
Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), recommends refractive surgery as
one of the best methods for correcting myopia, hyperopia and
astigmatism. In January 2000, Japan's Ministry of Health (now
the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) approved refractive
surgery by excimer laser, and recognized the safety of the procedure
as well. Approximately 40,000 procedures are performed within
Japan every year. As LASIK gains popularity in Japan, many people,
including professional golfers, athletes and celebrities have
already made the choice to live free from dependence on eyeglasses
and contact lenses.
